Biotech labeling bill introduced

The food industry reacted negatively to the introduction of a bill by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) requiring mandatory labeling of all biotech, or genetically modified, food, food ingredients, dietary supplements, feed and products from animals fed biotech commodities.

A letter urging rejection of the measure signed by 35 leading trade associations was sent to every senator. The bill exempts restaurants and other establishments that prepare food for immediate consumption, a fact used by opponents as proof that this is not a consumer safety issue.
