As such, it requires filling equipment that meets demanding precision-filling standards.

“Our customers entrust us with the first product out. It is very precious. They simply can’t afford to lose product in priming or miscalibration,” says Carol Horner, fill/finish supervisor.

Horner attributes Althea’s success in meeting these strict customer demands in part to having the proper filling equipment. One critical piece of equipment in the company’s operations is the FMB-210 filler, from Flexicon America.

“This filler gives us precision fill accuracy, and we are able to achieve larger batch sizes and minimize production personnel. All of this translates into more efficient product runs with lower client costs,” Horner explains.

Althea runs a broad range of products, and filling requirements are different from day to day. The reliability and flexibility of the Flexicon filling machinery meets the critical and seamless cGMP standards of operations as it keeps up with daily product and size changeovers, Horner says. The machine fills up to five vial sizes, each with a range of neck sizes and seal configurations, using the two-step filling operation for lyophilized containers.

To make maintenance simple, Horner adds, all parts are created to fit in only one direction. Each is numbered and labeled with a front-facing read for ease in part removal and attachment.

These procedures help Althea to provide manufacturing and development services that support researchers worldwide in their advancement of novel therapies and efforts to apply new genomic information. [CP]
