A new and more comprehensive Greener Package Awards competition for 2011 now invites participation by packaging machinery manufacturers to enter their equipment and technology for awards consideration. After much deliberation by industry-expert Greener Package Advisory Panel members, a new category of “Packaging Machinery” was added to the competition to recognize equipment/technology-based advances that enable more sustainable packaging solutions.

“When the Greener Package community looked what makes packaging machinery more sustainable, the consensus was that it’s not a smaller physical footprint or greater energy savings, it’s the ability of the equipment to run lighter-weight or more sustainable packaging materials,” explains Dave Newcorn, vice president/Digital & Custom Media for Summit Media Group, publisher of GreenerPackage.com.

Applicants in the Packaging Machinery category will be required to provide the same type of verifiable data as packaged-based submissions, with an end-user application cited as the basis for the entry, as well.

Three awards—two for Environmental Impact and one for Innovator of the Year—will be granted in the Packaging Machinery category. Details on the awards competition and a sample entry form for the packaging machinery category can be found at Greenerpackage.com/awards.

Entries for the 2011 Greener Package Awards will be accepted through May 6, with results announced on July 29. Winners will be profiled in the August issue of Packaging World magazine, as well as online at GreenerPackage.com.
