The PMMI Foundation in cooperation with the Garvey Corporation has selected the University of Florida as the recipient of this year’s $2,500 Mark C. Garvey Scholarship. PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, supports packaging education at more than 25 U.S. colleges, universities and technical schools.

“This was a difficult decision due to the quality of packaging programs at PMMI Partner Schools, but we were pleased to select the University of Florida as the recipient school of the Mark C. Garvey Scholarship for 2017,” said Jake Garvey, director of OEM Sales, Garvey Corporation.

The student selected to receive the scholarship, Caroline Krueger, is a senior at the University of Florida majoring in Biological Engineering with a specialization in Packaging Engineering. She has a 3.72 GPA and serves as president of the Packaging Club.

“I’ve seen Caroline’s dedication to her field time and again in the classroom,” says Bruce A. Welt, professor coordinator, Packaging Engineering Program. “Her academic success, combined with her leadership experience, will take her far as a packaging engineer.”

PMMI established the Mark C. Garvey scholarship to honor the memory of Mark Garvey, former president and CEO of the Garvey Corporation, a past chairman of PMMI and long-time supporter of packaging education. Each fall, the Garvey family selects one PMMI Partner School to receive the scholarship based on a commitment to excellence in the packaging industry. The school chooses a student to accept the award based on GPA, major, commitment to the packaging industry, extracurricular involvement and financial need.

In 2018, the PMMI Foundation will provide over $200,000 in scholarships to students majoring in packaging. Students must currently attend a PMMI Partner School to be eligible for PMMI Foundation scholarships. For more information on the PMMI Foundation, visit www.pmmi.org/scholarships.
