Shelf life extension for produce exports

An exporter of pomegranates that is based in Mumbai, India, is getting improved shelf life since it began using a novel flexible film designed to allow produce to respire at an optimal rate.

Supplied by Uflex (www.uflexltd.com), the Flexfresh bag material is described as a “hybrid polymer” that is also compostable. “The formulation of Flexfresh is a hybrid composition and this ensures that despite being from a petroleum source, the material is fully biodegraded in about 180 days in an industrial compost,” says Uflex. “We have received third-party certification for the biodegradation and both the liner and the soil have been tested as per DIN EN 13432(2000-12)."

The Flexfresh material is spread inside an open-top corrugated case. The pomegranates are placed by hand and the material is folded closed. The cases are then stacked on top of each other and palletized.

According to Uflex, the pomegranate exporter used to get about 45 days of shelf life when using conventional low-density polyethylene material. Now shelf life is 65 days.
