Plastic Technologies: Foamed PET bottle technology

Fi-Cell (fine cellular) foamed PET bottle technology from Plastic Technologies, Inc. (PTI) through an agreement with Toyo Seikan Co. Ltd., gives carbonated beverages, wine, spirits, cosmetics, personal care, and other applications physical and visual properties not previously available in a monolayer bottle.

Fi-Cell technology, which is also suitable for certain aseptically-packaged products, uses a process that produces monolayer bottles with a smooth inner and outer wall surface. (Other foamed bottle technologies require an overmolded bottle to achieve a similar result.)

The technology is significant for carbonated beverage applications that require a smooth inner wall for an accurate fill. Fi-Cell bottles have smooth inner wall which prevents production of underfilled bottles.

The Fi-Cell process also produces a visually-exciting metallic finish without the use of expensive metallic colorants, helping companies create strong shelf impact for their brand.
