Irradiation update

Buried in FDA reform legislation that is working its way through Congress is a provision that would limit the size of label disclosures about irradiation to a type size no bigger than that used in the list of ingredients.

FDA currently requires manufacturers to display prominently and conspicuously both a written statement and the international "radura" symbol indicating the food product has been irradiated, which the food industry feels is excessive. The provision drew fire from anti-irradiation and consumer groups.
