Print buyers seek more info

Nearly nine in 10 creative and printing buyers would like to become more knowledgeable about printing, according to a survey conducted by MAN Roland (Westmont, IL).

“Clearly a lack of communication exists between printers and creatives,” says Yves Rogivue, chief executive officer of the offset printing press maker.

The survey included more than 500 designers, art directors and others who buy printing regularly. When asked about specific topics of interest, “controlling color more precisely,” led the list, with two other responses close behind, “what to look for on a press check” and “ink and coating options.”

Also, nearly 91% of respondents said they would be willing to attend a free seminar to acquire more graphic arts expertise. As a result, MAN Roland plans to develop a “Printing for Creatives” seminar to be offered this summer. “Our data indicates that there is an opportunity for printers as well,” says Rogivue. “The facilities that take the time to educate their creative clients will be the ones that win more work.” —AO
