A new 1.33-gal (5-L) container made of high-density polyethylene includes a new Pull ’N Spray® II applicator that is conveniently accommodated in the container’s adjacent side pocket.
“We are redefining what it takes to participate in the high-volume, ready-to-use lawn-and-garden category with the new Pull ’N Spray II unit,” says John Freudenberg, Marysville, OH-based Scotts’ director of packaging and durables development. “There is nothing else that exists in the marketplace like this.”
Supplied by Saint-Gobain Calmar (Lee’s Summit, MO), Pull ’N Spray II applicator is made of a sunshine-yellow-tinted polypropylene copolymer. The applicator is designed to extract 40 mL of product from the container with one pull of the plunger. The product is then released by depressing the trigger.
“Our concept was based on fighting consumer hand fatigue that is inherent with a trigger sprayer,” says Freudenberg. “With our Pull ’N Spray II applicator, a consumer can store product up to the extent of 70 short strokes made on a trigger sprayer with one pull of the plunger. It is a huge benefit over trigger spraying, especially when trying to empty five liters of product.”
Restore and refill
Through consumer studies, Scotts found that their consumers needed a place to store the applicator. The solution was found in the container. Continental Plastics (Fraser, MI) supplied a forest-green-tinted HDPE container that was blow molded in a dual chamber to form the 5-L container and side pocket to store the applicator.
To identify the new product, Scotts chose CCL Label (Rosemont, IL) to flexo-print the pressure-sensitive label in six colors. Weed-B-Gon retails at costs between $13.99 and $15.99.
Priced on the higher end is a Scotts promotional display that includes a Weed-B-Gon package and free 8-oz refill bottle. Empire/Emco (Amherst, NY) supplied the HDPE container that is also tinted in forest green.
“The container has durability built into it that allows consumers to go into refill mode and reuse the product over and over again,” says Freudenberg. “This package gives our consumers the security that we are thinking about them and the way they apply product.”
