New wine claims

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has approved two statements that winemakers can put on their labels touting the "health effects" of wine, after three years of lobbying by the wine industry.

"The proud people who made this wine encourage you to consult your family doctor about the health effects of wine consumption," says one. "To learn the health effects of wine consumption, send for the federal government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans," says another, listing a mailing address and Web site. Both statements were modified from wine industry suggestions...Separately, U.S. wine producers are fighting a regulation by BATF that no longer allows them to label wine made from White Riesling grapes as "Johannesburg Riesling."
