Potato chips beware

Several California-based lawyers have filed notice with the California Attorney General claiming that potato chip manufacturers are violating California’s Proposition 65 after a recent report indicated high levels of acrylamide in potato chips.

Proposition 65 requires warning labels on products containing known carcinogens.

Although acrylamide has been listed under Proposition 65 as a carcinogen since 1990, only within the last 3 years have researchers discovered acrylamide in some foods cooked at high temperatures. Under the law, “bounty hunters” who identify violators of the law can share in any penalties assessed, provided alleged violators and law enforcement officials have been duly notified.
