PEF announces four inductees
Four career packaging professionals will be inducted into the Packaging Hall of Fame by the Packaging Education Forum during its annual Leadership Awards ceremonies Monday, September 10, at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. The event will occur during Pack Expo Las Vegas, Sept. 10-12 at the Sands Exposition & Convention Center.

Mandatory deposit bill introduced
The National Beverage Container Reuse and Recycling Act of 2001 was introduced in Congress by Rep. Lynn N. Rivers (D-MI). The bill amends the Solid Waste Disposal Act to require a 10¢ deposit and refund on every beverage container sold in the United States.

Welch’s Sparkling Juice is dressing up for the holidays. A new shrink-wrapped package, designed by Bailey Design Group (Plymouth Meeting, PA), should help Welch’s expand consumption of its product to times of the year other than Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. “The challenge for us was to create lively packaging that ties in directly to holiday occasions and promotes a feel of family and celebration while maintaining a premium image,” says Russ Napolitano, executive vice president and partner at Bailey.

Aseptic drink box recyclable in Canada
What was once reviled by environmentalists in the United States and was actually banned in the state of Maine in the early ‘90s is now the recipient of an environmental award in Canada. A new 250-ml recyclable Tetra® Prisma aseptic carton, which holds Oasis Health Break juice cocktails from A. Lassonde, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, received an Envirowise Award for its recyclability from the Packaging Association of Canada in April ’01.
