I’m Joyce Fassl, senior executive editor of ProFood World, with a Take Five news update.

Cargill and Continental Grain have paid $4.5 billion to acquire Sanderson Farms, the third-largest chicken producer in the U.S., which runs hatcheries, feed mills, and chicken processing plants in Georgia and across the Southeast. Sanderson will be combined with Wayne Farms, another large poultry producer and a subsidiary of Continental Grain. The combination of the two companies will create a new privately held poultry business that will be called Wayne-Sanderson Farms.

In other poultry industry news, Perdue Farms appointed Kevin McAdams as president of Perdue Foods and chief operating officer of Perdue Farms. McAdams joins Perdue Farms from Jack Links protein snacks where he was president for North America. McAdams previously held numerous senior positions including president of Schwan’s Consumer Brands and Pabst Brewing.

Fair Oaks Foods is planning to build a fully cooked, bacon facility in Davenport, Iowa. The $134 million investment includes a 150,000-sq-ft facility and will create approximately 250 new full-time jobs.

Workers will receive pork bellies and complete all the necessary steps before packaging and distribution. Construction is scheduled to start this summer and is expected to be complete in early 2024.

In pursuit of its goal of achieving 100% packaging that can be recycled, repurposed, or reused, McCormick is partnering with packaging and plastics supplier Berry Global on a project that mechanically recycles polyethylene terephthalate to produce a 100%, post-consumer recycled, plastic bottle for its new Assorted and Neon Food Color product lines.

By changing over to bottles made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic, McCormick will increase the circularity of its packaging. The company also will reduce associated carbon dioxide emissions. A lifecycle assessment estimates that McCormick will realize a reduction of 86.8 metric tons of CO2 emissions with the new post-consumer recycled plastic bottle.

I’m Joyce Fassl, back with my final installment of Take Five.

Thirty-six years ago, I made the right decision to work as an editor for a food trade publication, but now I am soon ending my career in an industry I have grown to love. Although you may see a few articles from me later this year in ProFood World, these are my final few days as a PMMI Media Group employee.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the people who stood beside me in both prosperous and challenging times. Without your support, I would not have been able to deliver the best content for our industry.

A million thanks to the food and beverage manufacturing professionals, advisory board members, industry suppliers, consultants, public relations professionals, and association partners, many of whom became friends, and provided great story ideas, industry insights, and many laughs along the way.

I also had the tremendous fortune to work with some wonderful mentors and scores of phenomenal coworkers and publishing industry professionals over the past three and a half decades.

In the remaining months of this year, I plan to do some PART-TIME consulting work for PFW on our Manufacturing Innovation Awards and Sustainability Excellence Manufacturing Awards. Please note the emphasis on part-time work.

Sincere thanks for reading ProFood World and my e-newsletter, Joyce’s Voice, over the past 6 years.

Thank you for watching this edition of Take Five.

Joyce Fassl is leaving the building.
