LBP Manufacturing and Henkel join forces to produce thermal insulation for packaging

LBP Manufacturing, global manufacturer of packaging solutions for the foodservice industry, and Henkel, global manufacturer of adhesive technology, have joined together to produce Thermolite packaging, sustainable thermal insulation for packaging.

Thermolite insulation is formulated from renewable material and applied in-line during the converting process to create multi-functional packaging containers suitable for a range of industrial needs requiring performance attributes such as: thermal insulation, barrier resistance, structural integrity, and impact resistance, while improving the overall sustainability of the package.

The launch of Thermolite packaging comes following the introduction of Starbuck’s EarthSleeve, a new hot cup sleeve that integrates the proprietary technology and chemistry to achieve a 34% reduction in fiber raw materials and does so without sacrificing performance or function. Manufactured by LBP Manufacturing and Henkel for Starbucks, the EarthSleeve also achieves a 25% increase in post-consumer content which together correlates to a savings of more than 97,000 trees.

“Thermolite packaging delivers immediate value because it transforms common substrates into high-performance packaging products,” said Matthew Cook, President of LBP.  “It is a solution that delivers performance on par with conventional packaging, but with less material, energy and waste.” Reduction in raw material can result in costs savings, supply chain efficiencies and enhances the sustainability of the packaging – all while improving the functionality of the package.

“We are excited about the opportunity to bring new, sustainable packaging technology and about the accessibility of Thermolite™ insulation to brand owners and converters ", adds John Meccia, VP- Paper Converting for Henkel Corporation.  "Henkel's multi-functional adhesives, combined with LBP's unique processing, can make packages lighter in weight and better at insulating contents. It is doing more with less. This opens up a whole new front for packaging innovation.”

Thermolite packaging technology is now commercially available.
