Europe OKs omega-3 claims

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reviewed and approved all proposed nutrition claims for omega-3 fatty acids and stipulated which kinds of foods could carry the claims.

Claims include “omega-3 fatty acid source” (must contain more than 15% of the daily recommended nutritional intake); “high in omega-3 fatty acids” (must contain more than 30% of the RNI); “high monounsaturated fat;” “high polyunsaturated fat;” and “high unsaturated fat;” each with its own conditions.

EFSA’s approval paves the way for the European Commission to finalize the claims in law.
