California group to reconsider recycling

It may not be required for lawmakers, but it probably should be. The California Resource Recovery Assn. (Sacramento, CA) has planned two seminars this fall to cover recycling policy (Sacramento, Dec.

10, and San Diego, Dec. 11). Michele Raymond, publisher of State Recycling Laws Update and Recycling Laws International, and a frequent contributor to Packaging World, will offer her views on topics ranging from recycling mandates to tax credits. "All states need to rethink how they have set up their recycling goals, because current policies [and economics] have simply not produced a reduction in material flows to landfills in most states," she says. Some of her views were expressed in her rebuttal of a The New York Times Magazine article critical of recycling (see PW, Sept. '96, p. 52). Each seminar will also include other speakers with differing points of view and time for general discussion.
