GPI's design competition winner announced. . .

Pw 4137 Msu Bottle

The winner of the Glass Packaging Institute's Glass Packaging Design Competition held last fall at the Michigan State University School of Packaging is "an elegant tear-drop shaped bottle for olive oil." Designed by MSU students Mike Rowe and Zack Werner, the package combines beautiful form with function. The shape is "based on an Old Italian wine bottle shape, with a rustic paper label," says Mike Rowe. Zack Werner's background in food science came in handy when considering functionality. "The amber color reduces the amount of sunlight entering the bottle, and the flint lower half provides a 'window' so consumers can view the product." And Rowe observes, "With olive oil, a lot of people like it to sit out on their counter tops, and glass has an upscale feel and makes the bottle look attractive." A reproduction of the winning design, which was created by Saint-Gobain Containers, will be displayed along with the design entry at the MSU Packaging School.
