In India, package design to get an overhaul. . .

A collaboration between the Indian government and the National Institute of Design (NID) hopes to teach small to medium-sized manufacturers the value of creative packaging design. Expert advice will be offered to these enterprises in order to help them improve the branding of their products and create attractively packaged goods. The goal is to help these small manufacturers—who make up "45 percent of the industrial output and 40 percent of the country's exports"—learn to compete on a national and international level. "The government is also working on a design certification standard 'I-Mark' like the ISO for all consumer products to ensure quality and uniformity of design," according to the director of NID. The standards should go into effect in 2011.
