A day late

The Food and Drug Administration has asked the Office of Management and Budget to approve a data collection project to help the agency understand consumers’ views of carbohydrate content claims on food labels.

OMP will be looking to see how consumers interpret the front panel content claims and how they affect purchases. The claims include “carb-free”, “low carb”, “x g net carbs”, “carb-conscious”, “good source of carb”, and “excellent source of carb”. The survey will be conducted online with 2귔 respondents in each of four groups: diabetics, nondiabetics who try to follow a low-carb diet, consumers who try to eat a high-carb diet, and consumers who do not fall in the other three groups.
