FDA considers health claim for soy

In 1999, the agency approved a health claim stating “Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease.”

Since the claim appeared, consumption of soy has more than doubled in the U.S. Now FDA is considering a qualified health claim linking soy with the possible prevention of cancers of the breast, colon, and prostate. If the qualified claim is allowed and the same pattern holds, U.S. soy intake could reach 4.5 g per day, about half that of Japan.
