Survey: Packaging lags in IT

Packaging departments “lack a common platform for development, collaboration, engineering analysis, and database management," according to a recent survey conducted by GlobalPKG and discussed at the Dimensions.04 conference in Orlando, FL.

Packaging professionals polled were asked to indicate what enterprise systems their packaging department needed to update. About 108 of the 160 respondents polled said document management systems needed updating; others indicated enterprise resource planning (SAP, Baan, JDE, Oracle), product data management, warehouse management, procurement, and quality systems needed updating.

These and other findings in the study, available from GlobalPKG, have led researches to deduce that a significant amount of time is spent dealing with packaging-related IT issues.

“Packaging professionals can and should impact the decisions being made around them regarding the iT requirements they have in order to provide competitive advantage to their companies,” said Robert DeNola, founder of GlobalPKG Inc.
