EPA funding in doubt

For good or bad, EPA's ability to continue to develop new regulations is threatened by the budget stalemate in Congress, which had not been resolved at press time.

There were reports that Republicans might allow the government to operate throughout FY '96 on a continuing resolution, while focusing budget writing efforts on FY '97. EPA was a prime target for Republicans in its initial FY '96 budget. According to EPA estimates, the Republican budget proposal would have eliminated 3ꯠ to 5ꯠ agency jobs, most of which were in the areas of regulation, inspection and permit issuance.
