Machinery sales to be robust, PMMI says

Sales of packaging machinery in the U.S. this year is expected to be up by about 6%, according to new research for the Packaging Machinery manufacturers Institute (Arlington, VA).

In data revealed at a press conference last month during interpack 99, 71% of machinery buyers contacted either will spend the same amount or more this year compared to last year.

The beverages and pharmaceutical/medical categories are expected to increase spending the most on packaging machinery, PMMI reports, with increases of 12% or more. The primary market drivers for purchasing equipment in '99 include continuing expansions and replacement of older machinery. Robotics and vision systems are the key technology drivers.
