Bite-sized dogs are in the bag

Oscar Mayer Mini Hot Dogs, in a compact, stand-up pouch, epitomize grab-and-go snacking.

A resealable, flexible stand-up pouch for new Oscar Mayer Mini Hot Dogs highlights the portability and convenience of Kraft Foods Global’s new snack-sized hot dogs. Introduced last spring, the miniature franks are available in two varieties—Beef and Cheese—and are promoted on-pack as being “Great For Snacking!”

Although Northfield, IL-based Kraft declined to answer any product- or packaging-related questions on the new snack item, some observations can be made about the glossy, colorful 10-oz pouch that holds the hot dogs. The bottom-gusset bag stands approximately 7-in. tall and is 7-in. wide, providing a bright and visible billboard for the product in the refrigerated aisle. Graphics include the iconic Oscar Mayer logo and the brand’s yellow, red, and blue color scheme, with metallic gold highlights. Enlarged photography of the mini dogs being dipped in ketchup suggest their use outside the bun.

On the back panel, type near the bottom of the bag directs consumers to “Sneak a Peek Below,” with an arrow pointing to the bag’s bottom gusset. There, clear film allows a view of the miniature hot dogs inside the bag. Bag film for the front and back panel appears to be a foil lamination.

Zipper allows for multiple snacking occasions

Bag resealability is enabled with a Zip-Pak® (www.zippak.com) Slider™ zipper, which employs a “clip” that slides back and forth, allowing the consumer to open and close the pouch. Before it is opened the first time, the FreshSlide zipper, as Oscar Mayer refers to it, is covered with a hood of film that is removed by gripping the side of the bag and tearing across the top. Once opened, the bag provides the mini hot dogs with a seven-day refrigerated shelf life.

Oscar Mayer Mini Hot Dogs are available in both varieties nationwide for a suggested retail price of $2.93.
