Turkey strips stand out in market debut

When Carolina Turkey Co., Mt. Olive, NC, was planning the launch of its new “Just Perfect” premium brand frozen cooked turkey strips, the company wanted distinctive, consumer-convenient packaging to complement the distinctive product.

After evaluating different packaging options, Carolina Turkey selected a bag-in-bag approach. The packages began hitting the store shelves in February 2006.

The inner bag is made of clear polyethylene film. The two-layer, tamper-evident outer stand-up bags are made of a printed 48-ga PE exterior layer laminated with solventless

adhesives to a proprietary opaque white polyethylene sealant layer. Exopack LLC (www.exopack.com) extrudes, prints, and converts the materials into preformed bags. Packages are flexo-printed with eight-color (including four process color) graphics. Exopack pre-applies easy-to-use slider zippers from Pactiv (www.pactiv.com) to the bags. These slider zippers incorporate a tamper-evident seal.

Carolina Turkey’s marketing manager Anthony Steed notes, “We chose Exopack as our packaging supplier because we have worked with them in the past and have found that they bring new ideas at a very competitive cost.”

The inner bags are automatically filled with 20 oz of product and sealed using fill/seal equipment from Triangle Package Machinery Co. (www.trianglepackage.com). These bags are loaded into the premade outer bags using fill/seal equipment from Pactiv.

“Just Perfect” frozen turkey strips were introduced to national markets during the first quarter of 2006. Retail price of the 20-oz packs is $6.99. According to Steed, initial consumer reaction to the new line has been favorable. —Judy Rice
