Beverage packaging: Champagne falls out of favor as new economy calls for tighter budgets

“Premiumisation” gives way to a drive for value

Dom Perignon, called the “Banker’s Choice” in a recent article on Telegraph.co.UK, has slipped 30 places and completely fallen off of the “Power 100” ranking of the world’s most popular drinks. Fewer investment bankers celebrating bonuses this year? Or are they just drinking cheaper stuff?

Other brands of champagne, Lanson and Tattinger, also fell off the list.

Moet et Chandon, still the world’s most popular champagne, came in at number 18, dropping 4 places from last year’s 14th ranked spot.

According to the article from Heidi Blake, “Smirnoff – the vodka brand – remained the world’s favourite tipple, with the whisky brand Johnny Walker in second place and Barcardi rum in third.”

Nine less known and less expensive brands entered the list for the first time, kicking out their high-priced brethren.
