"Freebies" may backfire for manufacturers, retailers. . .

When two products are packaged together and one is described as free, many consumers look askance, according to a recent study. "Freebie devaluation" occurs when consumers think low quality is the reason a product is being paired with a "free" product—the retailer must need a "marketing gimmick" to unload the item.
