It plans to invest 1.25 billion pounds in this challenge to US retailers such as Safeway and Wal-Mart. Tesco's motto seems to be "Whole Foods quality at Wal-Mart prices," a reference to Whole Foods Market, the leading U.S. organic food retailer. Though not trying to complete directly with "big box retailers" Tesco can exploit their cost-saving tricks including centralized distribution and ready-for-shelf packaging.
