Dutch are first Europeans to charge packaging tax...

A tax based on the calculation of carbon dioxide emissions per kilo of packaging material is now being charged in the Netherlands.

Aluminum and plastic packaging are being hit hard—57 eurocents for aluminum and 35 eurocents for plastic. The tax, which is being used to invest in a waste fund and recycling efforts, is less harsh for glass and wood packaging—4.6 and 2.3 cents respectively.
