The packaging gave Jel-Sert an innovative way to bring its glutamine-fortified endurance beverage to market.
The pouches are made of polyester/foil/nylon/polyethylene and feature Smart Spout™ reclosable tops. The dispensing assembly, which is hermetically sealed to the package structure, consists of a polyethylene fitment with a no-spill spout incorporating a silicone valve, topped by a tamper-evident, polypropylene EZ Turn Cap from Seaquist Closures. The closure assembly is brightly colored and ergonomically designed for easy opening, drinking/pouring, reclosing, and eliminates the need for a straw. Product contents only can be accessed by squeezing the container to force the liquid up through the one-way silicone valve and out through the spout. After product is evacuated, the packaged can be flattened, requiring minimal waste stream disposal space.
Bearing 8-color graphics and high-definition printing, the box-like shape of the package enables attention-grabbing, 4-panel billboard presentation of graphics and product information. The package also enables up to 50% larger fills compared to more traditional 2-sided pouches. In addition, the rectangular footprint of the package provides greater stand-up stability.
Energice is filled into 500ml QuadPAKs on continuous-motion Hensen CMF-200 filling equipment at speeds of approximately 200/minute. Product non-refrigerated shelf life is estimated at two years, with real-time testing expected ultimately to support a three-year shelf life. The products were introduced into national distribution through General Nutrition Centers (GNCs) in March 2004, and consumers have responded well to both the product and the packaging.
