Labatt launches first insulated beer cans

The new 473-mL (16-oz) Labatt Blue Cold One beer from Labatt Breweries of Canada, Toronto, Ontario, is packaged in aluminum cans wrapped in preprinted, insulated shrink labels.

Jointly developed by Multi-Color Corp. and DuPont, the revolutionary beer labels incorporate DuPont’s Cool2Go™ thin thermal barrier material consisting of high-tech polymer insulation sandwiched between two layers of Melinex® film. The patented structure is said to keep beer colder longer by preventing heat transfer from warm hands, condensation, or external temperature.

Multi-Color gravure prints the labeling material at its Graphics Services facility in Erlanger, KY, where prepress work, including separations and cylinder engraving, also is done.

The familiar bold Labatt Blue brand colors are highlighted by using silver metallic inks. Multi-Color then produces the finished labels at its plant in Scottsburg, IN. Labatt’s brewery in London, Ontario, fills and seams the cans and delivers them to contract labeler Alliance Labeling where a customized shrink labeling system is used to apply the insulated labels. —Judy Rice
