European companies get ahead on labeling

With Britain’s Food Standards Agency expected to recommend a “traffic light” system to indicate levels of fat, saturated fat, salt, and sugar in nutrition labeling copy, several major food companies are instituting a nutrition labeling system of their own, based on guideline daily allowance (GDA) information for key nutrients.

The amount of calories, sugar, fat, saturated fats, and salt will be shown. The food groups are said to be trying to persuade other manufacturers to accept their system as the industry standard.

Likewise, two major British candy manufacturers will place a “Be treatwise” label on candy packaging in an effort to avoid new regulations on marketing to children.
