US meat producers in dispute with Canada and Mexico

“Country of origin” labeling law question will be settled by World Trade Organization.

From a Packaging-Gateway.com article, Canada and Mexico meat producers and packagers are claiming labels marking country of origin may affect fair trade certified products.

This may be important because the “buy local” cry from the sustainable crowd is actually evolving into “at least find out where it came from and how, so the consumer can make an educated guess about carbon footprint, freshness, etc.”

“From Canada shipped fresh by rail” might fair better than “From Mexico shipped by truck last week.”
