EU biotech labeling slammed

The National Food Processors Assn. and the Grocery Manufacturers of America sharply criticized the European Union’s recently adopted labeling and traceability rules of foods and feeds containing genetically modified ingredients.

NFPA president John Cady called them “a new brick wall blocking the free international trade in foods and food products.” He said NFPA opposes “process-based” labeling. Mandatory labeling should be based on the composition, intended use, and health and safety characteristics of the food products, he said. Cady predicted the EU’s action sets the stage for another World Trade Organization legal case that will take years to resolve.

GMA said the EU’s decision “flies in the face of sound science.” Worldwide regulatory policies for biotech products must be based on scientific principles, it said.
