International labeling

At a recent meeting of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, an international body that issues principles and guidelines for international trade, the U.S.

recommended that the Codex Committee on Food Labeling undertake new steps to prevent misleading labeling in international trade. Clear definitions of what constitutes misleading labeling are needed, U.S. delegates said. The committee should develop principles and guidelines that can be used by member countries to determine whether a particular label is misleading or deceptive to consumers. The committee debated whether factors outside the realm of science should be the basis of global food standards set by Codex.
