Bemis Latin America was named a Diamond Finalist winner in the 28th DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation for its printed Coldform technology for the packaging of Doril Enxaqueca, a medicine from Hypermarcas, a Brazil-based consumer goods company with pharmaceutical and personal care product lines.
Enxaqueca is a Portuguese word for headache or migraine. The product contains aspirin, caffeine and paracetamol, providing antipyretic (to address fevers) and analgesic (pain relief) action.
Exhibiting excellence in Technological Advancement, Responsible Packaging and Enhanced User Experience, Doril Enxaqueca is said to be the first product to use Coldform printed locally in Brazil.
Sold in pharmacies and drug stores in Brazil, beginning in early 2015, the product is also available on specialized websites, according to Marcos Vinícius Correa, Product Marketing Manager, Bemis. He says, “Other products in the same category are usually sold in lower added-value structures such as blister and strip packs.”
In this instance, the Coldform technology replaces the blister’s polyvinyl chloride material, which allows for printing on a wide area for end-user communication and creates greater exposure of over-the-counter products. The new package also aims to reduce production time at a competitive price for pharmaceutical manufacturers.
For this application, Bemis Latin America sells the Coldform directly to the product manufacturer, says Correa. The Coldform structure is a mix of biaxially oriented polyamide/aluminum /PVC. The total thickness of the structure can reach 170 microns. The package is gravure-printed in five colors, although nine-color printing is possible.
As a result of the printable area and Coldform protection, the product does not need a folding carton, reducing the amount of packaging in the supply chain, and further allowing a more competitive price for pharmaceutical manufacturers.
