Make2Pack under ISA banner

“We are officially off and running as the Make2Pack SP88 Part 5 Modular Concepts for Automated Control Systems committee.”

So said Dave Chappell in his recent email to parties interested in the ongoing initiative called Make2Pack.

“We’re now sanctioned by and under the umbrella of ISA,” Chappell told me in a recent phone conversation. “Before we were just a workgroup sponsored by OMAC and WBF. Now we’re in a better position than ever to succeed.”

Even if they used to be “just a workgroup” before coming under the ISA banner, those involved in Make2Pack should be commended for the tremendous effort they put forth. Chappell calculates some 5ꯠ man hours had gone into the effort before it was handed over to ISA.

A key short-term goal of ISA’s Make2Pack committee, which is chaired by Chappell, is to create a prototype that demonstrates all the base concepts of automation interoperability across platforms with no need for customization. This is certainly in keeping with Make2Pack’s central mission, described succinctly at www.make2pack.org, the Make2Pack Web site: “Part 5 of the ISA-88 series of standards adds measurable business value by integrating manufacturing, packaging, and enterprise information systems through international standards instead of custom programming.”

Those wishing to stay apprised of Make2Pack developments and announcements, says Chappell, should bookmark www.make2pack.org.
