welcome to sustainable packaging explained your guide to sustainable materials methods and package design produced by the emerging Brands Alliance in conjunction with packaging World today's episode is a special MarketSpotlight on sustainability and cosmetics and personal care packaging according to a global sustainable study from Simon Kutcher and partners 85% of people globally indicate that they have shifted their purchase Behavior toward being more sustainable in the past 5years regardless of the market consumers are seeking authenticity and sustainability claims and non-transparent brands are being called out for inconsistencies in the world of cosmetics and personal care this is no exception consumers suppliers Brands and retailers are putting a heavier focus on sustainability than ever before at the packaging recycling Summit held in Atlanta Georgia last November representatives from Brand owner Estee Lauder Companies and retailer Ulta presented their collaborative approach to packaging sustainability in response to Consumers request for more sustainability in the segment um a lot of what I'm going to share here today is is what's publicly available but our own internal research really supports this one we we're seeing that guests expect companies to be responsible for protecting the environment companies and government um so they're not expecting that they're going to be the ones to do the work they really want us to do it um but also that they are especially younger consumers that gen Z guest is really starting to shop their values in a very different way they will not shop a product um if they think it has negative environmental or social impacts so that's really I think a big wakeup call for us as an industry for who the new consumer is as they as they grow up um but narrowing down to beauty within Beauty we actually find the beauty Shopper is very interested in sustainable packaging and they look at and consider options forLess packaging overall um but even more importantly they've gone out of their way to buy environmentally friendly Packaging and this really again shapes why sustainable packaging was such a critical one of the pillars we had to establish when we set up consciousBeauty and Ulta Beauty within the personal care and cosmetics industry three sustainable Trends emerge refill and reusable packaging products made from PCR and recyclable packaging many times recyclable materials can be used to create new packaging and many brands have begun to reduce the amount of Virgin plastic used in packaging other times recyclable materials are used so that consumers can recycle the package after use within Cosmetics that isn't always possible due to the constraints on Cosmetics packaging that require specific materials for the functionality and preservation of ingredients in that case a refill or reusable package can help minimize packaging waste by allowing customers to refill their existing containers we have been translating some of these learnings into what we call our packaging sustainability guidelines which are truly priorities that help our teams like design marketing and packaging development as well as that help shape our conversations with suppliers and other organizations that are helping us transform our packaging and that are helping us redesign our packaging with sustainability in mind these examples are some of the examples of the brands and products that are participating in conscious Ulta um you know Beauty as well as conscious Beauty at Ulta as well as other uh you know platforms whether that is of Our Brands or or others um in communicating our progress and our initiatives towards packaging sustainability and recycling as you can see here the two packages that we have here our bottle and our jar iconic products both uh in the portfolio of ESTLauder brand uh have been redesigned so that our decorations as well as the materials and formats that we are reutilizing are compliant with some of the current curbside recycling um criteria and as well we have engaged in life cycle thinking so that as we are transforming these formats and transforming these materials that we keep some of these benefits going Beyond just achieving an end of life for some of our packages achieving recyclability becomes very difficult and you will hear a little bit more about how we are partnering with others uh during our conversation with MIT and the sustainability Consortium such as for makeup products which represent a very challenging category for Cosmetics which will be makeup uh that due to the small size format as well as other constraints such as the use of many multiple materials necessary for the functionality of these packages prevents for us to achieve recyclability and as a result we embed other principles of packaging sustainability such as reuse or refill as we continue to exploreInnovations or solutions that will help us achieve recyclability in the futureOne Challenge in the space is that due to the small size of Cosmetics containers they do not perform well through the recycling Journey atMaterial recovery facilities however companies are exploring how to create these packages for refill and reuse to extend the life of the package before disposal as evident from the packaging recycling Summit event ELC and Ulta's combined efforts are aiming to help the beauty industry to redefine recyclability and sustainability while influencing industry players to create more sustainable circular packages with an increase in demand for sustainable cosmetics and personal care products and with cpgs and retailers taking interest in the state of the industry sustainable packaging within the space is set to grow of course as you explore exp new materials for your package it's important to conduct a comprehensive life cycle analysis to determine if aPCR based recyclable or refill package is the optimal choice for your product and join us for the 2024 packaging recycling Summit held this September inAnaheim the summit presented by packaging World engages Brands materials suppliers reprocessors and material recovery facilities or MERFs to shed light on all Links of the circular supply chain thanks for watching and besure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more videos on sustainability packaging and scaling
