Combining x-ray technology and machine vision

Inspection equipment manufacturer combines x-ray technology and machine vision into one system.

The new Innervision system incorporates both x-ray vision and machine vision technologies.
The new Innervision system incorporates both x-ray vision and machine vision technologies.

Two years ago, KMV Technologies and DVT began developing an inspection solution that marries x-ray vision and machine vision. The resulting system, called InnerVision, can see “through” opaque bottles, cartons, or packages at production line speeds.

The x-ray tube produces x-ray photons, while the InnerVision lens assembly focuses the x-ray beam to a specific area and angle, converting the x-ray photons into visible light. It multiplies that light intensity by a value of 35ꯠ and focuses that image onto the DVT camera.

With the resulting image, the DVT FrameWork software can be applied to look for specific defects in the package or product.

According to Michael Hahn, a partner at KMV Technologies, implementing the DVT technology is the most cost-effective solution.

“We needed a very powerful system,” he says. “Price versus performance, they’re the best that we’ve seen out there.”

Hahn adds that the unit is very safe and easy-to-use. Because it uses low-level x-ray intensities, no harmful x-rays are emitted while in operation. The DVT Legend camera is built into the unit, making operation easy and efficient. And according to the company, it can be easily configured for automatic inline or rotary table inspection as well as manual off-line shuttle systems.

“The concept itself is quite simple,” he says. “The two worlds just haven’t been put together prior to now.”
