Acid-etched look for plastic

When the owners at Hair Success wanted to introduce a line of haircare products to sell in their salons in and near Fargo, ND, they knew only an upscale look would do.

"We know our market [which is women]," says co-owner Jill Ellingson. "We wanted a package that is pretty enough to leave on the counter." The line, called Bianté, comes in a satin-frosted cobalt-blue bottle of polyethylene terephthalate that's screen-printed in one color. It's supplied by Twin City Bottle (Minneapolis, MN). To produce the blue frosted translucent look, clear stock injection stretch/blown PET bottles are sprayed with atomized inks. Twin City likens the look and feel of the bottle to acid-etched glass. The company says the process carries an upcharge of 10 to 12%. Is it worth it? "Totally," says Ellingson. "It sets it apart from the rest of the stuff on the shelves. Plus we have them displayed in the stores with lights underneath that shine through the bottles, so they really stand out." The products sell for about $12 for a 12-oz container. Now in the works are similar spray-frosted brown and white bottles for brand extensions, according to Ellingson.
