Packaging for toddlers

Launched nationwide in February, the Cheerios Tot Pack is big on convenience. No longer will moms and dads have to pour out this toddler-approved snack food into plastic bags before an outing to the local zoo or museum. Also, the Tot Pack’s size means it will travel well in a purse, stroller, or diaper bag. In addition, the contents can be conveniently poured. The container, which holds 1.1 oz of product, retails for $1.59.

The high-density polyethylene container is decorated with a full-body shrink-sleeve PET label that carries printing in six colors. When asked how such a container would score on the Wal-Mart sustainable packaging scorecard, a General Mills spokesperson had this to say:

“The General Mills Packaging Development Group identified packaging solutions to meet the needs identified by parents. The package is refillable and reusable, and the package carries a #2 recycling symbol, indicating that it is easily recyclable. In addition, during the bottle manufacturing process, all material scrap is captured and reused. Finally, we concentrated efforts to develop a convenient, small-sized package.”
