Under pressure

Coming up with a container that appeals to consumers, fits retailers’ shelving schemes, and withstands internal pressure as high as 60 psi is no easy task.

But that’s the kind of container that distributor Tricor Braun provides and blow molder H.D. Hudson produces for Madison, GA-based Gro Tec Inc.’s Eliminator Weed and Grass Killer (see packworld.com/go/c096). The container was recently judged Best of Show in the 2004 NACD Packaging Awards competition.

Inside the container is 1.33 gal of liquid weed killer costing about $11 at retail. Product is dispensed through a spray nozzle after the user activates a built-in pump. To enable the container to withstand the internal pressure produced by the pump, the sidewalls were designed to be on the heavy side. The curved four-footed base also helps “distribute,” and thus minimize, stress, says Tricor Braun. Empty-bottle weight is 520g (16.72 oz).

Design requirements also called for an ergonomically designed handle, an indented area near the base for hose storage, and a second indentation for the pump nozzle. Moreover, the shape had to fit efficiently on Wal-Mart’s shelves without diminishing shelf impact.

Graphics are carried on a pressure-sensitive polypropylene label printed flexo in six colors. It’s supplied by CCL Label. —PR
