Looks great, costs less

Better on-shelf appearance at minimal cost. That’s what Data Viz of Milford, CT, receives from the paperboard carton it specified for its new Conversion Plus suite of data-conversion software.

Cadmus Whitehall Group (Charlotte, NC) makes the carton out of Forte®, a 36-pt solid fiber paperboard from MeadWestvaco’s (Stamford, CT) Packaging Resources Group.

To provide sufficient room for the product’s detailed technical specifications plus sell the consumer on the advantages of Conversion Plus, Data Viz and Cadmus Whitehall designed a carton with a fold-out flap. That provides two extra panels for information about product specs and for merchandising graphics and copy.

Knowing that the 20-pt C1S paperboard they had been using for other Data Viz products already required a corrugated insert just to withstand distribution-channel stress, package designers at Cadmus Whitehall recognized that a more durable substrate would be required for the more complex and vulnerable Conversion Plus package. By selecting the 36-pt Forte board, Data Viz gains high-quality graphic reproduction without the “washboarding” effect sometimes noticeable in cartons made of mini-flute corrugated. And because the material has a compression strength equal to or greater than F, G, or N mini-flute corrugated, it’s strong enough for the fold-out style carton.

Cadmus Whitehall prints the board on a sheet-fed offset press in four colors plus coating. According to Chris Stenz at Data Viz, the use of Forte board eliminated the need for corrugated inserts and secondary corrugated shippers, as well as the corresponding assembly costs that such components entail. “We were able to realize a 10-percent savings in material costs and achieve faster packaging times,” adds Stenz. —PR
