Supplied by EcoLean (Helsingborg, Sweden), the pouch is called the LeanPouch, and the film is a combination of the company’s polyethylene with 40% calcium carbonate, or chalk.
The 3.1-mil-thick material is printed and fabricated into the gusseted pouch by EcoLean, including die-cuts for easy carrying. EcoLean also supplied a semi-automatic filler-sealer to Parmalat, says Mariano Gutman, commercial manager at the Uruguayan dairy.
The dairy, says Gutman, also produces yogurt in 1-L and 1.2-L sachets, but the new Licaudo de yoghurt product contains fruit pieces so it can’t be compared to other yogurts in flexible packs. As well, Parmalat Uruguay also uses an EcoLean flexible film for wrapping packs of butter.
“The Licaudo package has a very low environmental impact and a new appearance,” says Parmalat Uruguay president Eng. Jorge Gutman. “Ordinary dairy products are in great need of renewal, and we see this as very promising.” The LeanPouch is said to save as much as 60% of the energy required for competitive packages, is more economical to use and is easy to dispose of by the consumer. —AO
