The clear choice in jerky packaging

Phoenix-based Sun Valley Natural Products released its Jerqué line of gourmet beef and turkey jerky in October. The antibiotic-free, hormone-free meat product is packaged in a clear film pouch from Lithografix, a subsidiary of Lithotype (South San Francisco, CA), and is decorated with an award-winning label designed by Estudio Ray (Phoenix, AZ).

The film, a two-layer structure of 48-ga polyester and 2-mil clear linear low-density polyethylene, helps give the nitrate- and preservative-free jerky a 12-month shelf life. Sold in 2-oz portions, Jerqué is available in three flavors: Habanero Hot, Cranbola Chipotle, and Cowboy Confetti.

The label is flexo-printed in four colors plus three spot colors. At the recent 2001 AIGA Prisma award ceremony, Estudio Ray received the Certificate of Merit for the Jerqué label design. The distinctive Southwestern-style graphics feature a colorful depiction of either a bull or a turkey (depending on the meat used), and were chosen for their bold shelf presence and visual descriptiveness.

“We’re thrilled for Estudio Ray and are very proud of the recognition that Jerqué packaging has received within the design community here in Arizona,” says Delores Anderson, vice president of marketing for Jerqué.

Jerqué is available at gourmet, specialty, and natural food stores in the Southwest, where it retails for $4.49 to $4.99. (ALR)
