Roll cradles adapted to package roll-up doors

Having developed a line of roll-up doors for self-storage buildings, Betco, Inc. of Statesville, NC, needed an economical method of packaging the doors for transport.

Pw 17234 Cradles

A requirement was that the doors be packaged on a flatbed trailer so they could be shipped with the rest of Betco’s products, basically self-storage and general-purpose buildings. Joe Rabon, Betco’s purchasing manager at the time, discovered Fiberstax™ Recycled Fiber roll cradles by Rollguard® Products (Appleton, WI).

Betco now uses Rollguard’s Recycled Fiber FS-13-½ roll cradles, which have a three-roll configuration and come in hinged pairs. The roll cradles are 44” long, allowing them to fit precisely on Betco’s pallets. By stacking doors five layers high, Betco is able to ship 15 doors per pallet.

Due to the thickness and weight of the roll-up doors, Rollguard designed additional spacing and thickness to make its cradles higher and wider than cradles used routinely for products like rolls of film or paper. Also, the cradles for Betco were made heavier to withstand the weight of the doors.

Says Neely Cunningham, current purchasing manager at Betco, “They have been very responsive to our needs and requirements. There were several concepts thought of in the process, but this was the best solution.” (PG)
