OMAC gains in Europe

OMAC (Open Modular Architecture Controls) Packaging Workgroup, which is trying to simplify the development, installation, and operation of packaging equipment, reported significant progress at its April meeting at interpack 2002 in Germany.

Markem announced two new coders that incorporate the OMAC PackML state model. The model is designed to make packaging machines more “plug-and-play” when it comes to integration and operation (see Q&A, p. 32).

The SERCOS standards group promised to develop a packaging-specific profile, or implementation, for its communication bus, based on OMAC Packaging Workgroup requirements. Once that profile is complete, Rockwell Automation, Elau, and Bosch Rexroth promised they would build products that conform to the profile to enhance interoperability.

Also at the meeting, representatives from German and Italian packaging machinery trade associations said they intended to start working with the OMAC Packaging Workgroup.
