Omega Design advances the performance and value of bottle handling

New designs, controls and fabrication techniques add value to Omega's lineup of bottle unscramblers, desiccant feeders, shrinkbundlers and track-and-trace solutions.

At PACK EXPO International 2010, the company launches new designs that will expand its application range while raising packagers' performance expectations across the board.

New desiccant feeder will offer patent pending capabilities

Details of a new multi-featured, patent pending desiccant feeder will be announced by Omega Design at PACK EXPO.  Information was not available as of press time, but the new design is said to offer unprecedented accuracy and changeover flexibility.

New unscrambler makes patented rotary pocket technology more affordable

An updated bottle unscrambler replaces the company's popular Economy Rotary Pocket (Model ERP) unscrambler with advanced automation technology and frame fabrication techniques that make Omega performance more affordable for applications that don't require the full functionality of the company's mainline Model RP servo unscramblers.  Booth personnel will provide performance comparisons to help specifiers select the right model for their needs.

The compact, fully automatic unscrambler still features Omega's patented, self-adjusting rotary pocket system, which maintains full yet gentle control over plastic or glass containers.  It can handle various shaped containers, symmetrical or asymmetrical, from fractional to 64 oz., at speed from 20 to 280 containers per minute.

Omega Design selected an integrated operator panel/automation controller along with intelligent I/O and AC drives, all from B&R Industrial Automation, PACK EXPO Booth 1073, to deliver performance, ease of use and maintainability. B&R's packaging group provided the engineering support to optimize the unscrambler's cost/performance balance.

Uncompromising design features include improved guarding, electrical/positive break interlocks, a 20 cubic foot easy-load hopper, flow track elevator and rotary disc style sorter.

Options include tool-less changeover, integrated ionized air rinse, discharge conveyor and low level hopper.

New servo shrinkbundler

Likewise, a new servo-driven shrinkbundler replaces the Classic model and features a full color touchscreen human machine interface for easy, recipe-driven operation and fast changeover.  Primary frame construction is precision milled and anodized aluminum and presents an exceptionally small footprint.  The new bundler features improved ergonomics thanks to new seal bar and film roll positions.

The compact shrinkbundler collates, unitizes, wraps and safeguards a wide array of packaging products. The bundling system automatically collates and packages containers or cartons into a unitized bundle which protects against label marring and improves the distribution supply chain. The clear polyethylene film wrapped package provides instant product identification.

Speeds range from 130-150 containers per minute (cpm) for single lane, 200-240 cpm for dual lane and 240-300 cpm for triple lane configurations.  It bundles symmetrical or asymmetrical shape bottles, along with cartons and fifth panel cartons of various sizes.  Options include interchangeable components for single or multiple lane operation, stainless construction, film perforation, and infeed and discharge configurations.

Serialization solutions

Although ePedigree compliance dates and final standards are constantly changing and vary by state, the pharmaceutical industry widely accepts that the definitive requirement will involve serialization.

Omega Design recognized that the unscrambler is by far the best location for this track-and-trace coding.  The resulting OmegaTrack family of solutions protects brand integrity and supports unit level serialization.  Omega Design has incorporated 2D dot matrix serialization within new and existing packaging lines without impacting machine speeds or accuracy.

Omega unscramblers can quickly print and verify a unique ID (data matrix or other marking) on the bottom of every empty container. This unique ID contains enough information to keep track of the container temporarily on the packaging line.

Omega Design is the only manufacturer able to offer a complete printing solution within a single unscrambling frame. Using a patented rotary pocket system, Omega's Container Unscrambler can maintain full control over containers as they pass through the printing, verification and rejection stations.

Downstream, containers will receive a larger, permanent and fully serialized label, which will be recognizable to an end user along the supply chain.  As soon as this label gets applied to the container's body, a camera and serialized software management system will sync the label code with the container's ID.

Next, an Omega shrinkbundler can group and wrap the containers.  Upon exiting the heat tunnel, each bundle passes over a camera system, which reads the container IDs on the bottom of the containers and identifies the containers in the bundle. A new label can now be placed on the bundle to establish the parent-child relationship.
