Italian dressing and juice provider Polenghi LAS has developed Europe’s first extrusion blow-molded bio-based bottle for its organic lemon juice, using a new blend formulation of Ingeo™ polylactic acid from NatureWorks LLC.

By switching from polyolefin resin to Ingeo for packaging 10 million bottles of its new Bio organic lemon juice brand, Polenghi will conserve 1,000 barrels of oil and will reduce CO2 emissions by 126 tons compared to an equivalent oil-based plastic squeeze bottle, relates NatureWorks.

The supplier confirms that Polenghi’s achievement demonstrates the first European commercial introduction of a bioplastic substitute for polyolefin resins in extrusion blow-molding applications. The bioplastic is also said to offer stable pricing compared to the volatility experienced in the petroleum market.
