Casual tamperers tempted no more

An unlikely "marketer"--the State of Maryland--has taken steps to discourage casual tampering of crab meat packed in containers with snap-on lids. Seems that even the best-behaved supermarket shopper will occasionally sneek a peek, whiff or even a bite of that luscious but expensive fresh crab meat.

In June the Food and Drug Administration approved Exxon Chemical's (Houston, TX) Oppera® modified polypropylene film resins for use in direct contact with fatty foods such as salty snacks, processed meats and cheeses, and confectionery items.

Roberts Systems (Charlotte, NC) has introduced an on-demand, multi-axis servo-controlled intermittent cartoner called Servostar(TM). This multipack cartoner erects, loads, closes and seals cartons at speeds to 65/min, with 12" between cartons.

(Kingsport, TN) opened its first Latin American Eastapak PET plant in Cosoleacaque, Veracruz, Mexico; Eastman broke ground for another Eastapak PET plant in Zarate, Argentina; it will also build a new plant in Port of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, to produce PET for containers and PTA, a raw material used to produce PET.

Converter Graphic Packaging's Franklin, OH, plant is the first in the U.S. to use a new press that can print flexible packaging by gravure and flexography, and dry-bond laminate and apply cold-seal or hot melt wax-coat in-line. Kroger's coffee bags represent the first commercial application.
